Alpe di Siusi
Alpe di Siusi is the biggest high-alpine pasture in Europe with a surface of 57 km² and its altitude range from 1680 to 2350 m above sea level. This high-alpine pasture is located in the heart of the Dolomites and is surrounded by the Sasso Lungo Mountain Group, the Sciliar Nature Park, and the Catinaccio Mountain Group, the Northern Alps and the Sciliar Mountain Massif with Santner Peak.
Alpe di Siusi provides an ideal holiday destination for walks, hikes and climbing tours. The Alpe di Siusi Running Park is the only training area of its kind for hobby joggers and professional runners in Italy. The running routes are located at altitudes between 1800 and 2300 m above sea level and offer excellent training conditions for endurance sports. Cross-country national teams often visit the region, as do some of Kenyas most famous marathon runners.
During the winter season the high-alpine pasture, with its 60 km of cross-country tracks, is ideal for pleasant walks and cross-country tours. The region also caters for ski fans with 22 lifts awaiting skiers. If you don't like skiing you can try one of seven perfectly groomed toboggan runs. Or for a more romantic experience enjoy an outing on a horse-drawn sleigh through the beautiful winter landscape.
The touristic region Alpe di Siusi comprise the towns of:
- Castelrotto. It's the biggest town of the Alpe di Siusi region and it is located at an altitude of 1060 m. Castelrotto is a beautiful town with its old town centre, the church with one of the highest bell tower of South Tyrol and the many events which take place in the town.
- Siusi. This town is located at 1000 m above sea level, at the foot of the Sciliar Massif. From the town it is possible to take the cable car which, in few minutes, will take you on the Alpe di Siusi high-alpine pasture. Moreover, from the town centre, there are many paths which lead to some of the most famous castles and ruins in South Tyrol, such as Castelvecchio and Castel Salegg.
- Fiè allo Sciliar. The town is located at an altitude of 880 m. The town is well known for the Laghetto di Fiè, a lake with very clean water where it is possible to have a swim and relax in the summer season.
